24/7 on‑call (8/8/8 three‑shift) in Slack
Run continuous 24×7 coverage with three 8‑hour shifts using Rotation Clusters.
Overview
This guide covers the classic 8/8/8 three‑shift schedule for 24/7 on‑call coverage. Use a single handle (for example, @oncall) that always mentions the active assignee(s). It’s a simple way to run a continuous on‑call rotation (true 24×7) in Slack.
Option A: Same timezone, three daily shifts
- Create three rotations:
- On-Call 00-08 — starts 00:00, duration 8h, days you operate.
- On-Call 08-16 — starts 08:00, duration 8h.
- On-Call 16-00 — starts 16:00, duration 8h.
- Create a Rotation Cluster named On-call and include all three rotations.
Option B: Follow‑the‑sun (NA/EMEA/APAC)
Create one 8‑hour rotation per region and combine them in a cluster (@on-call).
Notes
- Overlaps at hand‑off are fine; the cluster may include two users briefly.
- Week‑long assignments: duplicate a user in a rotation’s queue 4× for Mon–Fri.
- Timezone: For true 24×7 accuracy in an 8/8/8 schedule, prefer UTC for the three rotations (for example, 00:00, 08:00, 16:00 UTC).
