Help center Day vs Overnight on‑call coverage in Slack

Separate day and overnight pools while keeping one @mention using Rotation Clusters.

Overview

Use two user pools—one for daytime, one for overnight—and mention a single handle (for example, @oncall) that always reaches the current assignee. This approach is ideal for a day vs. night on‑call rotation (an overnight on‑call schedule) and works well as a split‑shift setup in Slack.

Example setup

  1. Create two rotations:
    • Daytime On‑call — starts 08:00 in your target timezone (for example, UTC-5), duration 8–12h, includes your day team (e.g. Alex, Kim).
    • Overnight On‑call — starts 20:00 in your target timezone, duration 8–12h, includes your night team (e.g. Ash, Ali).
  2. Create a Rotation Cluster named On-call that includes both rotations.

Tips

  • Keep day and night users in separate pools to avoid double‑booking.
  • If you need two people during the day and one overnight, make the Daytime rotation a group rotation with size 2, and keep Overnight size 1.

FAQs

What if day and overnight overlap? The cluster will include both assignees; mentions notify both.

How do I cover weekends differently? Create weekend‑specific rotations (for example, Day‑Weekend, Night‑Weekend) and include them in the same cluster.
