East/West split on‑call in Slack
Configure East and West on‑call rotations with one @mention using Rotation Clusters.
Overview
Set up an East/West split on‑call schedule so your team mentions one handle (for example, @star-of-the-day) while coverage follows business hours across U.S. timezones. This pattern is often called an East/West on‑call schedule or a split‑shift on‑call setup for U.S. time zones in Slack.
Example configuration
- Create two rotations:
- Star of the Day - East — starts 08:00 in the Eastern timezone (UTC-5), duration 4h, East users only.
- Star of the Day - West — starts 09:00 in the Pacific timezone (UTC-8), duration 11h, West users only.
- Create a Rotation Cluster named Star of the Day and include both rotations.
- Mention
@star-of-the-dayin any channel to reach the active assignee.
Tips
- Keep pools isolated by timezone to simplify substitutions.
- For week‑long assignments, duplicate the user in the queue so they appear once per weekday.
Caveats
- Administrative actions (for example, cancel a week) need to be applied to each underlying rotation.
