Primary/Secondary on‑call in Slack
Configure tiered on‑call (primary and backup) with one @mention using Rotation Clusters.
Overview
Run tiered on‑call with a primary and a secondary (backup). Mention a single handle (for example, @oncall) and notify both during overlap. This pattern is commonly referred to as a primary/secondary on‑call rotation and is a straightforward way to manage backups in Slack.
Option A: Two rotations + one cluster
- Create Primary On‑call — daily or weekly interval.
- Create Secondary On‑call — identical cadence, different pool of users.
- Create a Rotation Cluster (On-call) and include both rotations.
Result: mentions reach the current primary and secondary.
Option B: Multiple regions with backups
Create Primary/Secondary per region (for example, NA‑Primary, NA‑Secondary, EMEA‑Primary, EMEA‑Secondary) and include all in one cluster handle.
Notes
- If you only want to notify the backup on escalation, keep the Secondary separate and avoid adding it to the cluster; instead, trigger via workflow or manual handoff.
