Restrict which rotation members can substitute, skip/cancel shifts, or reorder shifts.
- The owners of the rotation.
- Slack workspace admins.
By default, anyone who can open the rotation’s queue manager can substitute, skip/cancel, or reorder shifts, same as everyone else who can open the queue manager. Rotation Permissions let a rotation’s owners restrict any of these three actions to just the rotation’s members, or just its owners, to avoid accidental changes like a shift getting skipped or shifts getting reordered by mistake.
How to set rotation permissions
- Go to Home tab: Learn where to find Rotation App’s Home tab
- Find your rotation
- Open the rotation menu and select 🔒 Manage Permissions
The absence of this menu item means that you don’t have the permissions to manage them. See permissions. - Pick an access level for each of the three actions.
Each dropdown saves immediately: there’s no separate “Save” button.
The three controllable actions
Rotation Permissions are set independently for each of these three groups of actions:
| Action | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Substitute | Substitute with… and Undo substitution, both in the queue manager and from the channel message’s Quick Actions. |
| Skip or cancel shifts | Skip, Cancel, Unskip, and Uncancel, in the queue manager’s Shift Actions dropdown and from the channel message. |
| Reorder shifts | Move to (queue order), Duplicate, Remove, and inserting or removing empty spots. |
See Manage Rotation Shifts for what each of these actions actually does.
The three access levels
Each action above can be set to one of:
- Everyone (default): anyone who can open the queue manager can perform the action. This is the behavior every rotation had before Rotation Permissions existed.
- Rotation members and owners: only people currently assigned in the rotation, plus its owners, can perform the action.
- Rotation owners: only the rotation’s owners can perform the action.
Someone who tries a restricted action anyway (in the queue manager, or via the channel message’s Quick Actions) sees a message telling them they don’t have permission, and the change isn’t applied.
